Asia Pacific most battered by cyber threats in 2017

Almost 40% of global ransomware attacks were aimed at the region.

The Asia Pacific (APAC) region recorded the highest number of cyber threats in 2017, according to Annual Security Roundup Report of Trend Micro Incorporated.

The report revealed that the region accounted for almost 40% of the 1.7b ransomware threats from 2016 to the end of 2017. Besides ransomware, APAC also recorded the highest number of cyber threats for exploit kit attacks (70%), online banking malware (55%), and malicious mobile app downloads (72% of 3.3m malicious mobile apps recorded).

“The rising number of intelligent threats highlights the importance for individuals and businesses of all sizes to ramp up their cybersecurity efforts. Adopting a cross-generational strategy that includes a blend of security protections and risk mitigations can help to defend against old and new threats,” said Dhanya Thakkar, managing director and vice President of Trend Micro in Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA), in a press release.
