A Long Lunch

A long lunch is somewhat of an occupational hazard. I strategically avoid them because I know if I got into the habit of long lunches it would be a slippery slope to a nap in the afternoon and a very unproductive day (or worse). Once in a while though an occasion calls for a long lunch to celebrate. Two friends I’ve known since my early days in Singapore are both departing our fair shores to return to their countries of origin. These are two girls I know through bootcamp, the bi-weekly torture sessions I endure to enable all this eating 😉

Whilst we don’t see each other often outside of bootcamp we decided a special treat was in order to celebrate our friendship. It had to be somewhere nice, that embraced Singapore for all it is and so I chose Stellar at 1-Altitude.

Stellar has been around for quite some time, and I’m happy to report that it’s still a great choice for lunch. The one thing that has changed is that they no longer offer a bargain $36++ 2 course lunch, instead it’s $48++ for 3 courses. So it is a place for celebration but it is also worth it.

We were served a gorgeous looking plate of hors d’oeuvres to start that included crab on melba toast, watermelon bites and a rice cracker with fish roe (I think). It certainly looked pretty and tasted good, even if the morsels were hard to pick up. I went for the tomato and buffalo mozzarella as an appetiser. A beautifully presented plate, as Stellar is prone to, with tiny flecks of olive on the tomato and cheese.

This dish was ok but the buffalo wasn’t as good as I remembered from another visit and, unfortunately, I’d guess the tomatoes were local because they lacked that depth and juiciness that comes from a really good tomato. Still a good start though.

My main was the seared arctic char, served with fennel and a strawberry avocado salsa. I probably shouldn’t have ordered this given my aversion to sweet/savoury combinations but I tried anyway. The strawberry was too much for me so I had to pick it out. The fish though was cooked well and the roasted fennel complemented the fish well.

I had a case of food envy over the aubergine linguine, served with scallops and pesto. The decent sized portion was presented beautifully and certainly looked very tasty. The Iberico pluma (a tender cut of meat from behind the neck) was also gorgeous to look at even if only a small portion, at least it left room for dessert.

As usual I decided not to go for dessert and instead to pay the $8 supplement to enjoy a cheeseboard (and a glass of red of course, it was a long lunch afer all!) and I was entirely happy with the decision. The very well portioned cheese board included a gorgeous hard goat cheese, a soft triple cream and two other cheese I didn’t know but absolutely enjoyed.

Desserts at Stellar are from a buffet, so you can pick and choose what you like until your heart’s content. There was a rhubarb crumble, tiny lemon tarts, cakes, meringue and lots more.

Service was good throughout our long lunch and the view over Marina Bay and beyond is one that always impresses me, just make sure to ask for a table near the window when you reserve.
