New restaurants breathe life into Singapore’s ailing retail scene

Check out these new places that opened in Q2.

International food and beverage (F&B) players have become the unlikely savior of Singapore's struggling retail scene.

According to a report by Colliers International, new restaurants are still keen on entering the city-state despite intensifying retail headwinds.

Among the new restaurants which opened in the second quarter is roast duck specialist Four Seasons from London, which opened a 150-seat restaurant in Capitol Piazza.

The distinguished Parisian tearoom Angelina also opened a 60-seat restaurant in Capitol Piazza. Other F&B players which launched in Capitol Piazza are casual pizzeria Spizza Mercato, Swiss chocolate brand Teuscher Chocolates, Once Upon A Milkshake, The Rosti Farm, Dazzling Cafe from Taiwan, Tap Craft Beer Bar, casual eatery 1933, the 100-seat modern Italian restaurant Equilibrium and Austrian restaurant-bar Kaiserhaus, among others.

Beyond Capitol Piazza, Colliers highlighted that the F&B renaissance continues with the opening of MEATliquor, which serves American diner-style burgers. The company's first outlet outside Britain took some 4,500 sq ft of space in Duxton Road.

Over at The Centrepoint, renowned Mak's Noodle from Hong Kong opened a 900-sq ft, 40-seat restaurant in June.

Other new restaurants that have opened during the quarter in the central area of Singapore include dessert café Banana Tree at Keong Saik Road, gelato bar Everton Creamery on Everton Park and the 60-seater pizzeria Motorino Singapore at Merchant's Court on River Valley Road.

In the decentralised areas, the 350-seat Diamond Kitchen at Oasis opened in Science Park Drive while the 78-seat Korean fried chicken restaurant Chir Chir Fusion Kitchen Factory opened at Bedok Point along New Upper Changi Road.
