Can a Foodie Fast?

I’m going to reveal a little secret to you. I really don’t like the word foodie. Whilst I don’t like it, I do find the term quite useful for describing the thing it is that I do much of the time. According to Wikipedia “A foodie is a gourmet, or a person who has an ardent or refined interest in food and alcoholic beverages.[1] A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than simply eating out for convenience or hunger.” Seems fairly apt to me.

What I particularly like is that a) it’s a convenient word to describe a person with a great interest in food and b) along with the word Singapore it was available as a web address for me to start a blog about food in Singapore. So there you are. Anyway, since I’m now stuck with the label I’m going with it. And as a self styled foodie who has started 2014 in a particularly decadent eating and drinking fashion, but also with a renewed enthusiasm for life and for new challenges, I am officially embarking on one of these faddy fasting diets. My sister (a nurse) was suitably unimpressed when I informed her of my plans. Surprisingly Husband has agreed to take the journey with me so hopefully that makes it easier.

Anyway, the concept is that for two days a week, you limit your calorie intake to 500 (for a woman) or 600 (for a bloke). So you’re not entirely starving yourself. My goal is not so much about weight loss (although shedding a couple of kilos is going to do no harm at all) but about improving the overall health of my body. Evidence so far suggests that people partaking in a fasting diet vastly improve key health indicators such as blood pressure, insulin levels and even show improved brain cell activity. So I’m willing to give it a go. PLUS, the really good thing is that for the days when you’re not fasting, you get to EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT. Fits perfectly with my life that alternates between sitting around reading and writing, and eating a lot. Although I should clarify that although I eat a lot, it’s generally healthy food. I very, very rarely eat junk food, when I’m not eating out I cook at home, from scratch, even if it’s just an omelette it’s not processed food that has hidden calories.

The diet also fits nicely with my Geminian tendency of having a dual personality. Those twins have this way of throwing me from being a fit and healthy person to being a drunken glutton quite easily it has to be said. So if you notice a few inconsistencies in my online rants or my writing in general, you can put it down to food deprivation, or as I like to describe it, hangry-ness.
